Note* | | He Johann is reported to have been an opera singer but exactly where and when is not known. His profession was that of a shoemaker and he worked out of his shop in the front of his home at 253 Center Street, New Milford, N.J., until his death of Prostate Cancer in 1948.
Johann's entry into the United States was recorded on 22 July 1902. The ship was the Kronprinz Wilhelm of the North Germany Steamship Line (Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen), sailing from Bremen on 15 July 1902 and arriving in New York on 22 July. This record shows him being detained until his release to a cousin: Jno. Figert [sic; Feikert] of 310, E. 91 Str., NYC, on 24 July 1902. The record also indicates that his last residence was in Kaiserslautern. Research shows that Johann's cousin was Johann Feikert, born on 14 May 1869 in Roth. His father was Heinrich Feikert and his mother was Philippina Venter, the sister of Johann Venter's father. Also, Heinrich Feikert was a witness the recording of Johann Venter's birth in Roth.
The immigration record also indicates that Johann was 31 years old at the time of his arrival, which would place his birthday prior to 22 July 1871, however, his birth record shows that he was born on 12 Nov. 1871.
The first record of Johann in this country is of his marriage to Elisabeth on 18 Oct 1914, in Peetzburg (then the northern portion of New Milford), New Jersey.
A search was made of the 1910 Peetzburg census records (officially part of Palisades Township), but no record of him in the area at that time was found.
Johann filed a notice of intent to become a U.S. citizen on 9 Jan 1905, in New York City. His address at that time is listed as 988 Tremont Ave. NYC. He gives the year of his birth as 1871.
His Petition for Naturalization was filed on 26 Aug 1916, in Bergen County, New Jersey. Here he indicates his birth place as what appears to be 'Roth', Germany, and his birth date as 12 Nov 1871. He states that he has lived in N.J. since 2 Aug 1912.
His son, Erwin, reports that Johann had a sister who remained in Germany and with whom Johann did not communicate. Records of this sister were found in the Salt Lake City Genealogical Library. Her name is Katharina, and she was born on 29 Jun 1874. She married a Friedrich Schwarz and had many decendents, who still live in the area around Roth. |
