Elisabeth Weinig
F, #340, b. 26 March 1876, d. 9 April 1949
Note* | | Elisabeth Weinig At her birth, Elisabeth's name was recorded as 'Dorothea Elisa Weinich' according to H. Pohl, Pastor of the Lutheran Church in Westheim. This record identifies her as the illegitimate child of Barbara Weinich, born on the 26 Mar 1876.
The identifying of Westheim as Elisabeth's place of birth and all the information that was subsequently forthcoming, was the result of information obtained from the ships register of non-immigrant aliens in which Elisabeth's return to the US following a visit back to Germany was recorded.
The ship was the S.S. George Washington, sailing from Bremen to New York and arriving on 24 Aug 1912. This register also indicated that she still had a cousin, Andreas Hein living in Westheim. She also states that she first immigrated in 1895, a date which seems to be in doubt (see below).
Records at Westheim indicate an Andreas Hein being born on 3 Nov. 1885, the son of Andreas Hein, a cigar maker, and Christina Reulein Hein. However, the connection to the Weinig family, or which Andreas as the cousin, has not been established.
There seems to be no indication as to who Elisabeth's father may be.
Prior to her marriage, Elisabeth worked as a cook for the Jacob Tischner family at 134 East 61 St., New York. She was there for the 1910 census.
In addition to the ships record mentioned above, in both the 1910 and the 1920 census, Elizabeth claims to have immigrated to the U.S. in 1895. This does not agree with what the family believed, which was that she immigrated with her mother when she was a little girl; she would have been 19 years old in 1895. Her mother married Karl Froehlich in New York City in 1887, a fact which tends to confuse the matter. However, records of Elisabeth's Confirmation in the Westheim Church in 1889 would support the idea that she did not immigrate with her mother, but came to the US at a later date.

John Venter, age 42, living in Peetzburg, New Jersey (Peetzburg was an unincorporated section of Palisades Township, located in what was to become the northern section of the town of New Milford.), married Elizabeth Weinig, age 38, living at 134 E. 61 Street, New York City. |
Naturalization* | 18 August 1916 | Elisabeth Weinig was naturalized on 18 August 1916 in Bergan Co., New Jersey; Elizabeth was granted citizenship along with her husband, Johann Venter, when he was granted citizenship by the court on 18 Aug 1916. Both the 1920 and 1930 census indicates that Elisabeth was a naturalized citizen. However, I have search extensively for her naturalization records and have found nothing. Subsequently, I have learned that prior to women getting the right to vote in 1920, a wife was granted citizenship at the same time her husband became a naturalized citizen. This would explain why no papers for her were ever found. |
Death* | 9 April 1949 | She died on 9 April 1949 in Hackensack, Bergen Co., New Jersey, at age 73; Death was recorded in the State of New Jersey Death Records; No. 12143, Date: 9 Apr 1949 in Hackensack, New Jersey; Name: Elizabeth Venter, age: 73, Born: 26 mar 1876; Father: Weinig [sic]; Mother: Unknown [sic]. |
