The town of New Milford, in which he grew up, was a typical New York suburb that was just making the transition from a farming community during the years of his childhood. It's population had grown to 18,000 during these years although it measured only 2.5 x 1 miles.

Robert started his college education in the fall of 1963 and continued for a little over two years before dropping out in the fall of 1965.
