Erwin George Venter appeared on the census of 2 April 1930 in the household of Johann Venter at 253 Center Street, New Milford, Bergen Co., New Jersey.

     Johann Venter's LDS Familysearch Family Tree ID is: L8FB-YKH. Johann is reported to have been an opera singer but exactly where and when is not known. His profession was that of a shoemaker and he worked out of his shop in the front of his home at 253 Center Street, New Milford, N.J., until his death of Prostate Cancer in 1948.

Johann's entry into the United States was recorded on 22 July 1902. The ship was the Kronprinz Wilhelm of the North Germany Steamship Line (Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen), sailing from Bremen on 15 July 1902 and arriving in New York on 22 July. This record shows him being detained until his release to a cousin: Jno. Figert [sic; Feikert] of 310, E. 91 Str., NYC, on 24 July 1902. The record also indicates that his last residence was in Kaiserslautern. Research shows that Johann's cousin was Johann Feikert, born on 14 May 1869 in Roth. His father was Heinrich Feikert and his mother was Philippina Venter, the sister of Johann Venter's father. Also, Heinrich Feikert was a witness the recording of Johann Venter's birth in Roth.

The immigration record also indicates that Johann was 31 years old at the time of his arrival, which would place his birthday prior to 22 July 1871, however, his birth record shows that he was born on 12 Nov. 1871.

The first record of Johann in this country is of his marriage to Elisabeth on 18 Oct 1914, in Peetzburg (then the northern portion of New Milford), New Jersey.

A search was made of the 1910 Peetzburg census records (officially part of Palisades Township), but no record of him in the area at that time was found.

Johann filed a notice of intent to become a U.S. citizen on 9 Jan 1905, in New York City. His address at that time is listed as 988 Tremont Ave. NYC. He gives the year of his birth as 1871.

His Petition for Naturalization was filed on 26 Aug 1916, in Bergen County, New Jersey. Here he indicates his birth place as what appears to be "Roth", Germany, and his birth date as 12 Nov 1871. He states that he has lived in N.J. since 2 Aug 1912.

His son, Erwin, reports that Johann had a sister who remained in Germany and with whom Johann did not communicate. Records of this sister were found in the Salt Lake City Genealogical Library. Her name is Katharina, and she was born on 29 Jun 1874. She married a Friedrich Schwarz and had many decendents, who still live in the area around Roth. He witnessed the baptism of Berthold Schwarz on 23 February 1902 at Roth, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany; Birth was recorded in the Roth Civil Registry; No. 9, Date : 23 February 1902; Father: Friedrich Schwarz; Mother: Katharina Venter.

Gertrud (Schwarz) Conrad, Berthold's daughter, says that Grandpa Venter (Johann Venter) was Bertold's Godfather. Johann Venter immigrated on 22 July 1902 to Ellis Island, New York City, New York Co., New York; Johann immigrated to the US. Sailing from Bremen on 15 Jul 1902 and arriving in New York on 22 July 1902. His ship was the Kronprinz Wilhelm of the Norddeutsche Line. He lived on 9 January 1905 at Bronx, New York. He lived in 1907 at near Olmstead Ave., Unionport, Bronx, New York. He lived in 1908 at near Castle Hill Ave., Bronx, New York. He was a Shoemaker at New York City, New York Co., New York. As of 2 August 1912, Johann Venter lived at Peetzburg, Bergen Co., New Jersey. Johann filed a Declaration of Intention to become a citizen, recorded on 26 April 1916 (Petition #1852).

This document is the most important one in the research of Johann Venter. It relates the man married to Elisabeth Weinig in Peetzburg, New Jersey, the father of John Henry Venter, to the baby born Johannes Venter on 12 November 1971 in Roth, Germany. This is the only document existing that identifies the Town in which Johann was born. Without it tracing the Venter genealogy would be blocked. He was naturalized on 18 August 1916 at Bergen Co., New Jersey; Order of Court Admitting Petitioner was signed on 18 August 1916. Certifiicate of Naturalization, #680161, was issued on 1 September 1916. He appeared on the census of 15 January 1920 at Center Street, Palisades Township, Bergen Co., New Jersey. The marriage record of Johann Adam's wife, Maria Elisabetha Bernhard to Leonhard Bernhard (8 Nov 1768) states that Maria Elisabetha is the widow of Johann Adam Venter, placing his death sometime prior to November 1768.

Some investigation was involved in establishing the Peter Venter born on this date as the correct Peter Venter.

In the Archive records from Roth/Becherbach in Speyer I found the record of the birth of a Johann Peter Venter recorded on 14 July 1769. It is possible that this could also be the correct Peter Venter, but there is no actual link, so the connection still needed to be verified.

Further research revealed a Johann Peter Venter born on 5 Oct 1776 to Johann Peter Venter of Roth and his wife Charlotta. This seems to be a closer fit with his age at death. However, further evidence is desired.

A Peter Venter's death on 26 Mar 1814, recorded in the Becherbach Civil Death Registry gives his name, age, wife's name, father's and mother's name - tying everything together so there is not doubt that it is the Peter Venter reported here that was born on 5 Oct 1776.
He married Friederika Catharina Leppla, daughter of Johann Peter Leppla and Maria Elisabetha Gravius, on 6 September 1799 at Roth, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany; The marriage of Peter Venter and Fredericka Leppla is found at the beginning of the third part of LDS Microfilm #0416069. This section of the film is the civil registry for marriages in the town of Roth for the years 1818 to 1841. However, at the beginning of the section a listing of the marriages recorded under the French Republican Calender (FRC) between the years 1798 and 1817 is given. Here the marriage of Peter Venter to Fredericka Leppla is shown recorded with the FRC date of 20 Fructidor VII. This translates to the Gregorian date of 6 Sep 1799.
